Antenatal Screening and Counseling

An antenatal Thalassaemia screening program was launched at the government PKH and Zanana Women’s Hospital in Rajkot, with an aim of preventing new births of children with Thalassaemia Major. Preventing such births might sometimes be impossible if the family is financially unsound and is enable to bear the costs of a DNA test which is done at Mumbai or if the pregnancy is of over 20 weeks. Through this programme till date TCPP has screened over 14 thousand antenatal mothers and has helped them with the best course of action.

IMSRF also has a genetic counseling unit, which disseminates information about Thalassaemia and counsels the families of those, who are found to test positive for the Thalassaemia Minor. Pregnant women who test positive for Thalassaemia are advised to bring their spouses for the test and depending on the stage of pregnancy undergo Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) or Amniocentesis at B. J. Wadia Hospital, Mumbai. If the genetic testing confirms the existence of a Thalassaemia major child, the family as well as their Gynecologist are advised to consider the termination of the pregnancy.

I am a Thalassaemic child!

Taking life as it comes puts one on cloud nine,
Have I to suffer for no fault of mine!
All that was needed was a little precaution,
Life for me  has turned into suffering and  medication!
Awareness is the need of the hour,
Self restraint can save a life from getting sour!
Seek the welfare of the next generation,
Ask not why this new education!
Every life has a right to bloom,
Mine unfortunately is  destined to doom!
In every young person let there be wisdom,
Avoid Thalassaemia Major and  experience freedom!
