Testing Project for Relatives of Thalassaemia Major Patients

IMSRF has also started a Family Screening Project, wherein the entire family of a Thalassaemia Major patient is screened free of cost. The purpose in doing so, is to find out those  in the family who have inherited this genetic disorder. Thus the screening of the entire family tree of the Thalassaemia Major patient is very essential.

The local Health & Screening Thalassaemia Centre based at IMSRF, Rajkot, conducts nearly 3,000 tests every year. Through RVBB, IMSRF provides free blood to those Thalassaemia patients who are financially unsound. Over the years RVBB has provided over 18,000 units of blood to Thalassaemia major children for their regular blood transfusion.

Through this programme Project 'LIfe' has been able to reach to over 6 lac people and has helped them through various preventive and curative measures.

Over the last 15 years IMSRF has been collecting valuable information related to Thalassaemia for analysis and research. In order to make the retrieval procedure of data faster, IMSRF would soon  computerize data and make this information available to the beneficiaries. In order to prevent the birth of Thalassaemia Major child it is important to work with the Gynecologists for sensitizing them towards Thalassaemia. The pre-natal Diagnosis test is of utmost importance and it can become a part of the action plan by sending them to IMSRF for Thalassaemia screening. In addition to this IMSRF also has the plans to revive the Thalassaemia Awareness and Screening  Program for Students (TASS), that is designed specially for students, which on one hand provides them with information on Thalassaemia and on the other conducts tests on a nominal charge or free of cost.

Overall Impact of the Program:
  • Provided social security to the Thalassaemia Major patients.
  • Increased awareness about the disease among the people especially in the high risk communities.
  • Spread information about the best available resources for the treatment.
  • Enabled the family members of the patient to cope up with the situation through counseling.
  • Prevented the birth of Thalassaemia Major Children by testing the parents in time.
  • Collected large amount of data for research on Thalassaemia.
  • IMSRF is the only organization in Saurashtra Region that has the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Equipment.

I am a Thalassaemic child!

Taking life as it comes puts one on cloud nine,
Have I to suffer for no fault of mine!
All that was needed was a little precaution,
Life for me  has turned into suffering and  medication!
Awareness is the need of the hour,
Self restraint can save a life from getting sour!
Seek the welfare of the next generation,
Ask not why this new education!
Every life has a right to bloom,
Mine unfortunately is  destined to doom!
In every young person let there be wisdom,
Avoid Thalassaemia Major and  experience freedom!
