Rajkot Voluntary Blood Bank and Research Centre, established in 1981 and ISO 9001:2000 certified has been the first state of the art blood bank in Gujarat and was the first ever blood bank to start HIV testing in this region. RVBB has had the privilege of having its officials on the State Advisory Committee for blood banking and blood transfusion in India. RVBB has long been the model for upcoming blood banks in the country and has actively contributed to set the standards for blood banking in India, working closely with the Government of India.
Following closely on the latest technological and medical developments in the world, RVBB adopted and initiated the process of fractionation of blood in 1999, installing a blood component separation unit. A single unit of donated blood is fractionized into several blood components like plasma, platelets, red blood cells and white blood cells and each of these components can be given to different patients based on each patient's requirement.
This process facilitates judicious and wider scope of the of use of the donated blood and reduces the burden on blood donation, as a single unit of blood can serve life of three or more patients.
Blood components have longer storage life compared to the storage life of whole blood. Fractionation thus also facilitates adequate storage and optimum utilization of the donated blood.
RVBB, over its 26 years of service has collected over 2,76,000 blood units and served over 2,91,000 patients and is now a recognized Regional Centre for Blood Transfusion by the Government of Gujarat, having been entrusted with the responsibility of developing and supporting satellite blood centers in the proximity of Rajkot. RVBB's efforts at helping to develop more and upfront voluntary blood banks have been received well and the technology transfer by RVBB has ushered in quality assured blood banking services in the country.
RVBB is now on the threshold of yet another break-away development in to the latest state of the art technological advances and plans to move to new spacious premises to house new equipments and machinery, to have better flow of blood units, to increase storage and donation capabilities and to support advance research and analysis platform.
Advanced equipments like Apheresis machine and T-ACE have already been installed to facilitate the technology advantage.
